MATTHEW KENNEDY HPCS JUNIOR PLAYER OF THE YEAR

17 year old Matthew attends New Mills Upper School and is currently in his second year of A levels.

He is an all rounder; a right arm pace bowler who bats right handed. He had an extremely successful season in 2003 which was accredited to the hard work he had put in since he started playing cricket in the under 11's six years ago. Matthew was the leading run scorer in the Meridian Derbyshire & Cheshire League under 17's section with 550 runs at an average of 78.57. His highest score was a mammoth 140 not out in 17 overs against Tintwistle. He also scored 50 or more on four other occasions.

Matthew also contributed to Birch Vale's Under 17's League Championship season with the ball taking 15 wickets at an average of 7.00. This performance placed him second in the league bowling averages.

Over the six seasons he has played cricket, Matthew has achieved league representative honours at under 13, under 15 and under 17 levels.

If it wasn't for his part-time working commitment over the last two seasons, Matthew would have been a regular member of Birch Vale 2nd XI. On the occasions he did play he was well able to cope with the game at a senior level.

He is hoping to play regularly in the 2nd XI next summer and if he continues to make good progress then a 1st XI call cannot be too far away.

The Society would like to congratulate Matthew on being selected to receive this award and wish him continued success in the game of cricket for many years to come.
